Why So Serious?

When you meet someone in the Korean culture, whether it be your mother / father / sister / brother / boyfriend / girlfriend / someone at work, the first thing you say is “Hello”: 안녕하세요. (Literally means “Are you at peace?”). This can be used during the morning, day and evening.

When you meet someone for the first time, you want to say “It’s nice to meet you”: 처음 뵙겠슴니다. (Literally “I’m meeting you for the first time.”)

To introduce yourself, you can say, 저는 Yuri 입니다. (“I’m Yuri.”) Or you can drop the 저는, and just say “Yuri 입니다.”
To be more polite you could use 저는 Yuri 이라고합니다. (Literally “Call me Yuri.”)
A similar way of saying this is 저는  Yuri 이예요, (Literally “I am Yuri.”)
If you wish to be more informal you could use 내 이름 Yuri 이야. (Literally “My name’s Yuri.”)

Phew!

Another way to say “Nice to see you”: 만나서 반갑습니다.

Let’s wrap it up with a dialog:

Yuri: “안녕하세요?”

Alvin: “안녕하세요?”

Yuri: “처음 뵙겠슴니다. 유리 입니다.”

Alvin: “저는 알핀 이라고합니다. 만나서 반갑습니다.”
