Why So Serious?

MC: Right now your huge hit "Gee" causes such sensation: around the country, also around the world, I think, cause I’ve seen, uh, you know the Youtube videos?

Tiffany & Jessica: Yeah!

Tiffany: I’ve seen quite a few of them actually.

MC: It’s not just from Korea, right? There’s one from Thailand that I’ve seen, and other countries too.

Tiffany: Yeah, other countries. And boys and girls. That’s so interesting, yeah.

MC: Exactly. So, did you did you expect that this album or that single at least would be this popular?

01_Tiffany Tiffany: We had no idea. We really had no idea. Um, preparing for this album, we took a lot more than we expected, like we took a lot more time than everybody else expected. But I guess, as hard as we worked… a few back is getting, yeah it’s paying off!

MC: Okay, but when you guys hear a song do you know, "Okay this is gonna be a hit" or you just kinda put it out there and see what happens?

Tiffany: Of course there’s always really really good music, like all the music we’ve done so far, we really like it. But this song was actually pretty new and it’s kinda different from what we did in the first album, so we were kinda scared but at the same time we were like, "we should be scared and we should kinda make it ours if it doesn’t look like ours…"

Jessica: And actually it became ours.

Tiffany: Yeah.

MC: Okay, that’s good. So you said that you took a lot of time to prepare for this album and you guys have new a image as well, how else do you think you’ve changed, at least from this album since the first one.

Tiffany: I’d have to say, we mature so much…

MC: Okay, in what ways?

Tiffany: Musically, physically, mentally, and as a group, I’d say we grew up a lot and a long time ago we just, like, argue about stupid things and now we understand each other a lot more and we’re all running after one goal, so…

Jessica: I think it actually shows, like when we go on stage we feel more mature, we feel more comfortable on stage.

MC: Okay, so how do you think it’s changed in terms of relationship between you girls, because nine girls, that’s a lot. I know girls can be a little bit catty sometimes.

Tiffany: Baseball team! ㅋㅋㅋ Yeah! We can be catty ’cause we are pretty catty.

MC: ‘Cause you’re like sisters, too.

Tiffany: Yes. We are sisters. That’s exactly what we call each other, but… It can get catty but what’s really really… like, we’re really well balanced so we all, like, we’re all really catty but we’re not catty to each other. We’re catty when it comes to, like, our group. Like, if somebody says something about us, we’re like, "What?!"

Jessica & Tiffany: ㅋㅋㅋ

MC: Very protective.

Tiffany: Yeah, we’re really protective…

Jessica: Tiffany is really over protective.

Tiffany: Yeah, I really… actually I’m pretty catty.

Jessica: OVER protective. I was kidding.

MC: You’re the mother figure of the group. How about that?

Tiffany: I don’t know when I turned this way.

MC: You’re getting older. HaHa. I’m just kidding, you’re only 20. I’m kidding! I’m 27, you guys have nothing to worry about.

MC: You guys just released your new single album, at least. Did you guys worry a little bit about who you were gonna compete with, in terms of the pop market?

Tiffany: Honestly, of course there’s always the competition but it wasn’t who we were competing with, it was the fact that we were actually coming back and we wanted to be at our best. We weren’t afraid, like, "[gasp] what if we lose to someone" it was "we don’t wanna lose to ourselves" so we’re kinda perfectionists. HaHa.

MC: In competition with yourselves. That’s wonderful.

MC: You guys are both Korean-Americans, you’re (Tiffany) from L.A. right? and you’re (Jessica) from San Fransisco, so how do you guys get signed by S.M.? Which is a Korean company, right?

04_Jessica Jessica: Well, I was casted in Korea, actually. When I was in Fifth Grade…

MC: Very young!

Jessica: Yeah, I was very young. ㅋㅋㅋ I was shopping with my mom, and…

MC: They just scouted you on the street.

Jessica: Yeah.

MC: What about you (Tiffany)?

Tiffany: Actually I was, um, casted…

Jessica: Singing!

Tiffany: Yeah, I was singing at an audition actually and at the time I was 15, just turned to a sophomore in high school, and then they asked if I was interested in singing. And I definitely was, so I asked my dad and he said no, but somehow I got away and I’m here now!

MC: Ooooh.

Jessica: And she came to school with me, in Korea.

Tiffany: Yeah, we were going in a foreign school together.

MC: So regular school, okay.

Jessica: Foreign school.

Tiffany: Foreign, American, international school. So we’re pretty familiar with the whole American… school society life, yeah.

MC: But basically you guys were signed by S.M. Entertainment since those ages, 10 and 15 or whatever, so did you guys start actually training since then?

Jessica: Yeah.

Tiffany: Yeah. It started immediately when we got here. But it’s like everybody thinks that the whole training system to be, like, super-hard, like, buff and pain, you know? But actually it’s not all that bad, it’s pretty much… as much as you put into it, so…

Jessica: And the Company is really, um… they’re very caring…

03_JeTi Tiffany: And supportive. Really supportive. So let’s say, like, "I wanted to sing, I wanted to act, I wanted to do something", they’d be really supportive and support us…

Jessica: In every way, yeah.

MC: Can you describe a little bit about your training life, like, what was the typical day, typical week, what kind of class did you take?

Jessica: A typical day… After school…

Tiffany: ‘Cause we’d go to school in the morning, from, like, 7 to 3…

Jessica: And then after schoool, we’d come and have lunch and then…

Tiffany: Practice.

Jessica: We’d practice.

Tiffany: So the practice would be based on lessons, so…

Jessica & Tiffany: Singing, dancing, acting.

Tiffany: And like, Chinese, and languages.

Jessica: Japanese.

Tiffany: After that it’s strictly based on all up to your own practice. Your self practice. And then, like, after two years I was there we were put in a group. Our group, like, preparation was, like, two years, right?

Jessica: Two years.

MC: Did you guys know each other before you’re put into the group?

Jessica & Tiffany: Yeah!

Tiffany: We were friends. We always went to school together, so it was really cool actually.

Tiffany: Since I went to an American high school, like, American school my whole life, school was kinda cool, pretty laid back.

MC: In your classes at S.M. Entertainment, was there a group or is it individual classes?

Tiffany & Jessica: There’s both.

Jessica: Singing could be individual and dancing was pretty much in a group.

MC: What was the hardest part in training life, do you think?

02_JeTi Tiffany: I’d have to say it’s all in the mind. Because it’s not… nothing’s forced. It’s all up to you, honestly. Because as much as you wanna do it and as much you put into it that’s exactly how much it comes back to you, I guess. Nothing was really, really hard, it was just, I think the stages of just going through it, you know? Like, if you wanna be a doctor, you have to go to school for, like, seven years.

Jessica: Actually I had a hard time finishing my homework and doing my essays and studying for a test, so we’d stay up together or call each other.

MC: It’s hard enough being a student much less a trainee as well.

Jessica & TIffany: Yeah.

MC: You guys are on TV, you’re on every, seems like every  variety show.

Tiffany: Oh yeah. ㅋㅋㅋ

MC: So you guys have a very busy schedule. Right now, though, TaeYeon is the leader of the group, she’s currently taking part as the fake wife the comedian Hyung-don, which is from the show "We Got Married". What do you guys think of the show and also that fake marriage?

Tiffany: It’s amazing ’cause we’re really really like the show and we always, like, a viewer of the show…

MC: Fans…

Tiffany: Yeah, we’re big fans of the show. And now that TaeYeon is on it, even more interesting. At first we were really schocked, but we’re really supportive and the fact that he is actually a lot more caring than everybody thinks he is. He’s very caring and very careful.

Jessica: Humorous.

Tiffany: I’d say, since we’re young, we probably say no, we would never wanna get married to him, but let’s say we got older and we were actually looking for a husband figure, he actually might be a very good husband figure.

MC: Oooooh, I’m sure he’s gonna thank you for saying that.

Jessica: I didn’t say that.

05_Tiffany All: HAHAHA

Jessica: I’m just kidding.

MC: Okay, but do you think they’re good match, at least on the show?

Jessica & Tiffany: Yeah!

Jessica: They’re really cute couple, actually.

Tiffany: They’re a very cute couple.

Jessica: Yeah.

MC: Would she ever seriously considered dating him?

Jessica: Um… I don’t know.

Tiffany: She’s very young, she has a bright future. And we love her very much. ㅋㅋㅋ

MC: Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.

Tiffany: Age ain’t nothin’ but a number.

MC: The first time they met actually, he went to your guys’ apartment.

Tiffany: He was shocked.

MC: Why was he shocked?

Tiffany: He’s scared. ‘Cause we were like…

All: Nine girls!

MC: And they’re all young, right? So you guys actually live together, right?

Tiffany: Yeah, we do.

Jessica: Yep.

MC: How many years have you been living together?

Tiffany: It’s now almost through second year.

Jessica: Yeah.

06_KBSRSCMC: How is it sharing a bathroom with seven other girls?

Jessica: It’s not "how is it living together" it’s "how is it…"

Jessica & Tiffany: "Sharing a bathroom!"

Tiffany: But honestly, I guess sharing a bathroom is like, the biggest deal.

MC: It is. It is! I agree, I live with five other girls too.

Tiffany: We’re really well balanced. So let’s say Jessica wakes up late, then I’m the one who wakes up early. So it’s like, in and out, in and out and timing’s pretty right?

MC: Did you guys, like, sit down and make a schedule using the bathroom?

Jessica: No no no.

Tiffany: We’ve never…

MC: Just go with the flow…

Tiffany: It’s well molded together.

MC: Soulmate!

Jessica: Yeah, we were meant to be. We’re soulmates.

07_We're In Girls' GenerationMC: Speaking of destiny, soulmates, that kind of thing, YoonA was actually in "You’re My Destiny", TaeYeon’s in "We Got Married" What about you guys, are you thinking of getting into acting?

Jessica: We’re in "Girls’ Generation". . . ㅋㅋㅋ

MC: Okay.

Tiffany: That was a joke. Jessica’s not really give it. Just kidding. Actually, we’re always in for a new ride, so, if we’ve ever had the chance, ’cause we’ve always been preparing and we’re always up for the challenge.

MC: But nothin’s set as of this year or anything…

Tiffany: Nothing’s set right now. What’s actually we’re concentrating on… going around together as…

Jessica: Nine of us together.

Tiffany: …Because it’s been a while and honestly Jessica and I over here are very selfish with their music. ㅋㅋㅋ So for right now we’re pretty much putting it all into our group.

MC: Right. I mean you got a lot on your plate as it is.

Tiffany: We love it.

MC: Okay, then again there’s nine of you, all in a very different…

MC: What do you think is the funniest or strangest rumor you’ve heard about yourselves or the group? ‘Cause there’s a lot of things going on the internet…

Tiffany: …

Jessica: Um…

Tiffany: Jessica looks pretty… bumped.

Jessica & Tiffany: ㅋㅋㅋ

Tiffany: I don’t know…

Jessica: Actually I have a lot of things on my mind right now.

Tiffany: What’s one of them? What’s the funny one?

Jessica: The funny one…

MC: Something that you can actually say on the air… ㅋㅋㅋ How about that?

Tiffany: Actually… There was this new comparison program thing, where they compared my last album and the album now, they were like, "Wow, she got a lot smarter over one album" so I was like, I was just growing into my skin, I was embarrassed, but it was kinda fun and I think it’s a good experience for my family ’cause since they weren’t with me for the three years, they can actually watch me grow.

MC: Exactly.

Tiffany: I was pretty happy with… but it was funny, so…

MC: But I think that stereotype of you being not as the, not the sharpest tool in the shed, that’s kinda part of the show, right?

Tiffany: I’m Foreman, I’m getting sharper.

MC: But that’s part of the show, though… right?

Tiffany: No! It was like… I don’t know. It was never an act. I just so happened to not know some vocabularies. ㅋㅋㅋ

MC: But don’t you think that editing has something to do with it, like the way they portray certain people.

Tiffany: Yeah!

Jessica: Of course.

MC: It’s not really "reality show", we call the "foul reality" because it all depends on editing, right?

Jessica & Tiffany: Yeah.

MC: Do you pay attention to what the angry netizens or the tabloids say about you guys? Or do you just try to… you know…

Tiffany: The first album, yes… Obviously I was very sad at some false accusations.

Jessica: You were?

Tiffany: A little. But I never really showed it. But now it’s kinda like, "Huh!" It kinda makes me into a better person and a better entertainer.

Jessica: I kinda think of it as attention.

Tiffany: Yeah, attention.

Jessica: If we weren’t… If I weren’t Girls’ Generation’s Jessica, she wasn’t Tiffany, people wouldn’t really talk about us.

Tiffany: It’s all about interest. "Thank you for loving us some much!"

MC: That’s the thing though. Don’t they say "there’s no such thing as bad publicity" because at least you’re in the headlines.

Tiffany: Yeah, that’s true.

Jessica: Yeah.

MC: It is hard to hear that kind of stuff, but again…

Tiffany: So we’re just taking it as constructive critisim.

MC: Yeah, I would take it with a grain of salt. Just forget it.

08_JeTi Tiffany: See! I swear I grew up now. ㅋㅋㅋ I woulda been crying.

Jessica: We woulda been crying. ㅋㅋㅋ

Tiffany: I’d be crying, Jessica, she said I’m fat… ㅋㅋㅋ

MC: Whatever. I’m fat to them I guess.

Tiffany: No!

MC: So one last thing. What would you say to our listeners out there?

Tiffany: Jessica, wanna go first?

Jessica: We came out with our album last month: "Gee" and I hope you guys enjoy our music and we’ll see you guys around soon.

Tiffany: First and foremost I would like to thank all the fans, not just in Korea, but all the listeners right now, too, because we’re very overwhelmed and grateful for the much love you have given us and I’d like to say that since we were, kinda absent for 2008 we’ll be here thoughout 2009 and I hope you look forward to our new music.

Jessica: Thank you, bye bye.

MC = Sarah Jun
